Man eating burger.

If your chocolate craving is strong — and you still want to lose weight, you’re in luck. Today, Im going to tell you exactly which chocolates to eat to lose weight.

I recommend you understand WHY you have chocolate cravings (e.g., Is chocolate a substitute for sex in your life? ) — and while youre doing so, Im going to tell you exactly which chocolates to eat to satisfy your cravings.

Heres the great news, eating dark chocolate (at least 70% cocoa) is a satisfying way to fulfill your chocolate craving, while eating drastically lower sugar and fat than other chocolates. Dark chocolate has also been shown to reduce appetite and stabilize blood sugar levels, two major contributors to weight loss! Dark chocolate also contains flavonoids, which are highly antioxidant and good for your heart.

The key to eating dark chocolate and still losing weight is to eat the right portion size. A small square or 1 oz. (28g) is the perfect amount to satisfy your sweet tooth and help you lose weight.

Below are the common categories of chocolate and their cocoa/sugar content. Since chocolate is made from cocoa beans, the percentage cocoa in chocolate signifies the amount of cocoa, and the remaining amount is sugar.

– Dark chocolate (recommended above 70%) means that 70% of the chocolate is cocoa, and 30% is sugar; ; more bittersweet
– Semisweet (35-60%) means that 40 — 65% is sugar
– Milk chocolate (10-20% cocoa) means that 80 — 90% is sugar
– White chocolate (0% cocoa) — does not contain any nutritional value

Dark chocolate is satisfying: I find that when I eat milk chocolate, it tastes good but it never satisfies me. Dark chocolate is different, it is rich and deeply satisfying. When you’re starting out, don’t chew on the chocolate, just let it melt in your mouth.” – Dark Chocolate Reviewer

Acquiring the taste for darker chocolate: For those that don’t like Dark Chocolate, please realize that like wine, coffee and dark beer it takes a little bit of time to acquire the palate to appreciate the complex flavor. But if you go slowly, starting with 65% and going up to 70, 85% and 90% as your palate adjusts, you will discover how wonderful it can be.

Now, when I eat 60% chocolate it tastes so sweet! Not only is the 85% better because it has more antioxidants but it also has much much less sugar than 35% milk chocolate!”– Dark Chocolate Reviewer

Dark chocolate is great for a low-carb diet: “As someone who watches carbs I enjoy the fact I can eat a couple of pieces and it completely satisfies my chocolate craving. Not only that, I can easily stay within my carbs for the day.” – Dark Chocolate Reviewer

Below are my 4 recommended options for dark chocolate to fulfill your chocolate craving with less sugar. Remember to work up from less to more cocoa.

Lindt Chocolate

Lindt Excellence (70% – 99%)
Smooth Dark, 70% Cocoa
Extra Dark Chocolate 85% Cocoa
Supreme Dark 90% Cocoa
Dark Noir 99% Cocoa

Note: I include Amazon links so you could see the specific recommendation; however, these may not be the most cost-effective.

Easily available, lower-quality dark chocolate like M&Ms and Milky Way, even if they say “dark chocolate,” are a lot higher is sugar and many of the benefits have been processed out.

If you dont have a chocolate craving, or are working with me 1-on-1 to lose weight, I dont recommend you ADD dark chocolate to your diet. Having 1 square is a best option alternative for chocolate when you uncontrollably crave it and WHILE you are working on understanding why you have cravings.

P.S. If you wish you could free yourself from your sugar cravings – and as a result, lose weight easily – I can help you. I’ll tell you about how you can lose 30 pounds in 6 months and stop sugar from ruling your life!

    Hi Nagina,
I love chocolate. Used to really crave for milk chocolate, but since I lost 12 lbs I no longer like the sweetness of milk chocolate. Now I enjoy dark chocolate very much. Yesterday I bought Lindt Chili Dark Chocolate. (sounds weird right?) 😛 But it’s delicious! Maybe we should have a chocolate party together. 🙂

    Hi Nagina,

Helpful post as usual with easy actionable recommendations.

As someone who is working around diagnosed food intolerances, I wanted to contribute a brand to the list that has 55 – 85 % cacao options and is free from peanuts, nuts, dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, fish and gluten. I use this to slay my own cravings demon since i’m allergic to gluten, dairy, eggs and most nuts. I love that it doesnt taste any different from what i used to have before (Godiva, Lindt, etc.)

It is called Pascha and the link is : http://paschachocolate.com/about-us/
