Here’s a few typical yet misleading weight-loss headlines that pop into my Inbox regularly:
- Lie #1: “Walk off your Belly by August 2!” – Prevention magazine
- Lie #2: “To maintain a healthy weight, get more exercise and worry less about cutting calories” – Coca-Cola, cited in the NY Times
- Lie #3: “Nothing is off limits, as long as it fits within your daily target” (daily target = starving yourself to death eating tiny portions and counting points) – Weight Watchers
The grisly reality is, people do believe that doing crunches or working on an ‘ab-flex machine’ is the fastest way to lose weight. They think that cutting their calories and feeling “hangry” (e.g. so hungry they’re angry), cranky and irritated is the only way to lose that muffin top. That’s exactly why we see SO many women following fad diets and working their asses off on the treadmill and elliptical in the gym DAY AFTER DAY. Even if they don’t have the time, energy or fitness level to do that.
And what happens next?
They keep working up a sweat, sacrificing their time, energy and other commitments…only to end up stepping on the scales and realizing they haven’t shed more than few ounces in MONTHS.
All their efforts, hopes, and dreams seem to be evaporating in the air…and they’re left with nothing but ultimate disappointment. When they look in the mirror, it further reminds them of all what they did and how they couldn’t get any results, so they feel like a FAILURE.
