What are the best spices for flu?
My husband was recently feeling a little under the weather with a stuffy nose, chest congestion, and a slight fever. When he is sick, it seems like the world stops. He lies in bed and naps like he’s been punched all over. All other responsibilities are totally on hold.
Hmmm, seems kind of nice ;)!!
I gave him my Curried Garbanzo Beans, and his stuffy nose cleared immediately! His chest felt better, and it seemed like he had just eaten a magic healing concoction. “Babe, what did you put in here?” he asked me as his eyes opened further than they had in days and he sat up straighter in bed.
Have you ever eaten a flavorful dish that seems to immediately make you feel so much better? If so, you have felt the power of herbs and flavors that make you healthier – like curing your cough, sore throat and other flu-related symptoms.
After trying out lots of combinations on my own, and testing them to see what really works, I found the 3 spices and herbs that pack in the flu-fighting benefits.
Feeling healthy is one of our first and basic needs to being able to accomplish anything in our life. When we feel good, we can direct our energy to other things in our life. If we don’t, that is the only thing we can think about — because our health impacts everything. Today I am sharing my 3 favorite spices for flu and healing herbs and spices.
Need Flu-fighting Spices? Or an Herb for Colds?
1. Ginger (reduces coughing and sore throat)
Ginger contains chemicals that reduce nausea and inflammation and improves the digestion of nutrients. It soothes sore throats and reduces persistent coughing. (1)
Chopped ginger is perfect to cook in vegetables, meat, and beans, blend in smoothies and add to tea.
2. Garlic (keeps the immune system strong)
Garlic is a powerful antioxidant and helps to strengthen our immune system. (2) It can be taken through the winter months to help prevent a cold and can shorten the length of time if you do get a cold.
Raw garlic is the most effective way to experience its benefits, but cooked garlic is also beneficial. Here’s a quick garlic tea recipe that uses raw garlic: Add 3 chopped garlic cloves to boiling water, with lemon and honey to taste.
3. Capsaicin (reduces nasal and chest congestion)
Chili peppers have been used for centuries in remedies designed to help heal the common cold. Capsaicin, the main ingredient, breaks up nasal congestion by stimulating the mucus glands in the lungs and nose. (3)
If you’ve tried it, you know it works. Capsaicin is found in chili peppers, such as jalapenos, serranoes, red chili powder, and even red chili flakes that you sprinkle on your pizza.
There you have it! Those are the best spices for flu.
